Someone mentioned nicknames....
Sep. 19th, 2008 10:45 amOh gods. And I WAS having a good day. Nicknames *feh* -- and when your NAME is generally perceived to be a nickname...it gets bad.
Sub, calling roll in 5th grade classroom:
Jennie...*here*
Robert...*here*
#####...
#####!...*other kid pokes me, whispers "aren't you gonna answer?" "No, that's not my name."
#####!!...*marks absent, proceeds with roll; end of roll, does head count, one too many since #. is absent.*
We go through the whole deal about why didn't I answer when she called my name, she DIDN'T call my name, it's in the book as ## and that's my name. According to her, ## is a nickname, not a REAL name. Winds up with her hauling me down to the principal's office, where said principal advises her to drop it. Nope, I'm in trouble bigtime for disrupting class and lying and whatever else she can think up. The principal asks me for permission to show the sub my birth certificate. Of course I agree.
Sub ignored me the rest of the day since I wasn't gonna answer to the wrong name and she wasn't gonna use a "nickname."
Yeah, I think that's part of why I tend to ask people what they want me to call them rather than "What's your name?"
(Uh, what about Jennie? Or Steve, rather than Stephen? *shrug*)
