Yeah, so I'm not a morning person.

And I'm REALLY not a people person.  I get overpeopled reallyreally fast most days.

And I must be a helluva actress, because most people believe I really do like them and tell me it's so nice to work with such a pleasant individual.  And I wonder who they are talking about b/c I KNOW that ain't the me I know!!

I'm sarcastic, rude, and getting much better at not saying anything. at.  ALL.

WHY do people in general think I'm nice?????

I'm NOT nice.

I don't WANT to be nice.

Believe me, if I do something nice, I have a reason.

It may be as simple as "Because I wanted to" or I may expect favors along the line.

Doing my job is not "nice," it's a paycheck.

If I smiled at you in the hall, it ddin't cost me anything and I'm probably getting entertainment from watching you try to figure out what I'm up to.

If I take candy in to share, it means I get to eat some of it too AND I get to explain why it's there (Equinox, Samhain, etc).

Being civil at work means I don't get hauled into the office and counseled -- again, to my advantage.

I read somewhere (and if you know where this is from, please tell me and I'll give it proper attribution) that no-one does anything they don't want to do.

Consequences.

If you don't maintain your vehicle, it'll break faster and be more expensive to fix.

If you don't go to work, soon you won't have a job to go to.  You want to sleep in?  OK, would you rather do without the TV or the fancy tricked-out ride or -- oh, you'll go anyhow?  I guess you know what you want, then!

That's what I mean.  I'm not "nice."  I AM aware of the consequences of my actions, most of the time.  And if I do something, there's a reason.  Often a self-serving one.

*Dons Nomex suit and SCBA*

Go for it.

Clobber me.

I'm tempted to copy and paste the first half of this entry as my LJ profile. (You did a damn good job at describing us, darlin'!)

You're so cute when you're misanthropic.

:D

Then I'm cute about 80% of the time -- the rest I'm sleeping!

I bet you're cute when you're sleeping, too.

>:)

I know I am.

In fact, I think that's the only time I'm nice, too. Hmm..

Unless I'm dreaming. *nod*

Yep. That's it.

The quote sounds something like one of the Satanic Principles "There is no altruism in nature", plus I've been saying that for years. "People are gonna do what they want to do, nothing more." Crowley said something similar.

It costs less and hurts less to be nice and it also might give you a bye when you are having a not-so-nice day.

Whereupon Zia snarks herself

Yeah, but that's still not the way I remember it being expressed. I suppose it's one of those Universal Truths (tm) that has been expressed so many times by so many people that it has become a part of the collective subconscious.

(*giggle* OMGs how pretentious that is!!!!!)

Macchiavelli said everyone acts only in their own self-interest. Just because you have a motive to be nice doesn't mean you aren't nice. It' means you're pragmatic about it.

Congratulations. You've just summarized John Stuart Mill's philosophy of Utilitarianism. [grin]

Nothing wrong with that. I believe it would be a rare thing indeed if people didn't do something nice for a self-serving reason.
