Re:  thispost

Under the current rules, I'm not going to be eligible for retraining funds.

First comes the folks who don't have a GED or HSD -- and yes, there are a few at the plant.

Now most of these few folks in this category have been at the plant for 20+ years.
Seems like that's plenty of time if you wanted to get a GED, doncha' think?

Second are those who DO have a GED -- and that's all they have.

As it happens, I have an AAS.

Oddly enough, while I was in school getting that, I got laid off.  SINCE I was already IN school, I couldn't get that covered.
And that was as a single parent, suddenly jobless.  As I was on food stamps at the time, I was REQUIRED to take any job offered -- temp, part-time, any shift -- and to leave school if the job would interfere with that.  Fortunately, I had been taking morning classes as the plant had me on second shift, and the jobs I was offered were all second shift as well.

Seems like they're rewarding folks who don't want to make a better life for themselves, but there ya go.
If you have a good reason why this isn't the case, and not just "ur so meen!", let me read it, please.

Then there's the bit that Massage Therapy isn't on the "hot list" of careers with a bright and shiny future for some silly reason, so that wouldn't be funded IF I were eligible.

Soooo.....

Apply for financial aid, find sponsors, seek private grants.

I'm gonna do this.

Any ideas how?

Actually, yes...

Go to the library. Seek out the reference librarian. Tell her you want the book that lists private grants available. You will be shocked at some of the stuff that grants are given for. My ex's sister did this, and got a $3,000 education grant for having red hair and freckles. There are thousands of them for all sorts of odd reasons, and I'll BET you fit the criteria for at least one of them.

See Ban's reply above -- I'm doing that this week!

Why that's the case

Very easy reason Zia dear. The way they decide those things sucks. It's idiotic. The folks who don't want help, don't want to improve their lives or themselves, want to live in squalor and poverty, and are generally lazy and using the system qualify for help first. Then the folks who don't need help, but want to take advantage of the system qualify. Those of us who want to improve our lives, need help to do it, and are willing to work hard, get the shaft. If I get married, Jericho and I will lose most of our college financial aid. But I don't, working as a waitress and not attending college at this time, qualify for food stamps, Medicade, or any other government help. My job doesn't provide insurance, and I'm lucky working 6 days a week, the 4 to five hour shifts available, to bring home more than 150 dollars. But this is the only job I've found that has no trouble working with my college schedule when I'm taking classes. My boss has been known to send folks home when she thinks they should be studying harder than they are, when it's exams week or a big test is coming up, sometimes when folks don't want to go home. Jericho won't qualify for ANY college aide until after this kid is born. Then he'll be covered. Right now, we're looking at a 30,000 dollar hospital bill when this kid is born, that we have no way to pay unless I get on medicade.

So that's why Zia love. They system is imminently flawed.
