Watching Red Dwarf for the first time.

So far I'm not impressed -- though it's so bad that I can see how it'd have a following.

ETA:  It's just...maybe this will explain me vs Brit humour:
When I first saw Monty Python and the Holy Grail, I was trying to make sense of it. Until someone explained to me that I was trying too hard, I was totally lost and confused!  A couple of shots later, I was enjoying it just fine.

I watched most of the first season and I wasn't the most impressed. However, a friend told me that the series supposedly gets better after the first season--apparently with the addition of a robot character.

Oh, yes. Chriton is an excellent character. They needed the straight man to offset the goofiness of the others.

It grows on you. Of course, so does fungu, so I can see how that's not a recommendation. Just wait until Lister forgets where he parked the Red Dwarf and has to...well, you'll see, it *does* get better.

I'm giving it a shot -- the first episodes I saw were perhaps not the first in the series, as DH was setting scenes as they started.

I'm sure that in little-to-no time, you'll be refering to people that piss you off as "smegheads".

The first couple of times I saw it, I really didn't like it. I avoided it for some time, until it came on between one of my favorite Brit-coms and another that I wanted to see, so it was easier to just let the TV run in the background while I did something else.

Once you start getting to know the characters, and some of the recurring jokes, it gets MUCH better.

I'm just agreeing with the consensus: you must have an appreciation for British humor to really enjoy it. The mockworthiness of crappy sets and such are just a plus.
Part of my personal enjoyment is that I know a guy just like Dave Lister, only Ohioan.
