Over a week ago, I called a certain salon in Springfield for an interview to see if they'd rent me the room advertised (for massage, natch).  Went in, had the interview, "we'll let you know."

A couple of days later, i posted a CL ad saying that I was looking to rent a room for this purpose.

The husband of the gal who had interviewed me responded saying that I should call her for an interview.

NOW there is another ad up, and from the looks/phrasing I believe it's the same salon and the same people.

It's in a decent location, etc., and the price is bog-standard for the area, so I'm wondering if they're just too picky or if there's something ~wrong~ that I'm not picking up on.

I did mention that I'd be happy to audition at their convenience, just LMK when...

In Other News, there's an open house this Saturday at the Herb Depot (where I have my studio) and both therapists will be doing free 5-minute chair rubs that day.  I've also posted that if you book for the month of April (and yes, I'll be including the last week of March in that) you get $20 off your one-hour session.  And that I'll be having a drawing for one free session.

Going to ask the other gal if she'd like to set up a tip jar between us with the contents going to, say, a no-kill shelter or the Humane Society or somesuch.

No, sad this is the reason -I- haven't applied to spas. It's Spa "LOOK" mentality. They don't want you in their salon because of your weight. I hate to say this, because It shouldn't be this way, but it is. It has nothing to do with your skill, and if you're renting the room, Paying for the pleasure? They shouldn't have you audition at all. FUCK THAT. however, They're being biased here.

I have a place in a smaller town, some distance away, but there's no walk-in potential, nowhere to wait for clients or for their driver/spouse/whatever to wait for them...frustrating. And it's like, you can't lose the weight THAT fast. At least, I can't. Not down to where they seem to want. Most of the gals in those places are freaking sticks, no hips even. IF they have teats, it looks like tennis balls glued to a pencil, so you know they're fake. And their skin is ashy and dry and broken out, and their hair is brittle, and you can't convince me that's a sign of good health. And I know YOU know this, I'm just a bit frustrated right now.

i agree with the first comment. it's sad, but they are selling a look to their clients so i imagine the staff needs to embody it.

I knew a lady here in town that made hers mobile. She got a lightweight bed and but what she needed in a fanny pack and would advertise that she would come to you. If she had to travel out of town she charged extra for it. She was the same price as anyone else in town but didn't have to pay rent or deal with a boss of any kind. She also gave a price break of I think ten bucks if they would come to her home. It's an idea.

i did a story about Lush a few years ago and signed up as a mystery shopper here in the UK.

one of the criteria for the store questionnaire is that "the staff look like they use the products not like they need the products'.

i always thought that was pretty harsh. but even Lush has to uphold their image.

Working in this industry is frustrating to me on so many levels. And what the beauty industry as a whole has done to women's self image makes me very angry.

It's taken me a while to get coherent on this one.

Yes.
The twits who run these salon/spas apparently have yet to grok that while they're selling Look, you're selling Be; don't have to look like a dewy-lipped prepubescent girl to be healthy and in balance.

There's something to be said for self-employment.

I will say that doing outcalls can be glorious. You'll need a good stout screening policy (ie, newbs need a referral from a trusted client), and a cart for the table wouldn't be a poor investment. But I did a bit of it on the side, when I was in TN, and it rocked.

Either way, don't let the turkeys get you down.

I agree with most of these comments :(
Sadly it might be true

Personally I would not want a massage from someone who looked like she was eating the fruit flavored lotions when not working because she was starving herself for some f-ed up "ideal" of beauty

Or looked like I needed to give her damn sandwhich so she wouldn't pass out during my massage

*hugs*
