hmm maybe because silk is not something made from the result of taking the animals life?

you cannot get leather or bone without the animal first being dead.

silk however is the result of that animal's work....

To get silk, you boil the cocoon until the caterpillar (on its way to becoming a butterfly) dies, then unwind it.
