I've noticed  several  userpics recently that I recognise from online comics or  artwork posted on various sites, but when I go to check  and be certain  of who the artist is,  the attribution is someone else entirely!  [Poll #1038436][Poll #1038436]

That's something that annoys me about crediting for user pics. Some people just crop down a larger photo belonging to someone else and then they demand credit for it. Anyone can gank images but in my experience, very few credit the actual artist.

that's one of my LJ pet peeves, people who crop a picture and then get pissy that you stole "their" icon.

Personal opinion is that the original artist should get the credit. IF the mods are realy extensive, not just cropping to fit, THEN that one can have a secondary credit. But sheesh.....

I agree that the original artist should get credit...although if it is a public domain picture (say Kermit the Frog) or a cartoon that most would know the artist of the work, I usually credit the person that made the icon.

I went with, original artist and modifier. Contingent on the latter person actually doing some modifying. I've got several icons that are pics that I either cropped or scaled down. That took maybe ten minutes to do satisfactorily.

The only thing I ever mind is if someone ganks an icon from me without asking first, even if it is a scale-down/crop. I did put ten minutes into that...would it hurt to ask?

Depends...some icons are pieces of art in themselves, where someone has spent a lot of time animating them and so on...and you have a limited space for credit, so then, I tend to credit the icon maker.

Eh, the internetz are serious business...it's an icon! Once you put it out there, anyone and their mom can gank willy nilly! Credit is nice, but since so many are taken from copywritten works or are using a likeness without permission, getting bent out of shape over credit get silly.

I put credit to the icon maker, if known, and if someone points out that they or someone they know made an icon I don't have credit for, I'll add it, but somepeople take it waaay too far.

I could have made it clearer, I suppose -- what got me onto this poll was that I saw an icon which was a cropped bit of a comic pane, with the artist's lettering from the text balloon pasted onto the bottom. And it was credited to someone else entirely.

Might not have taken it so badly but the artist's stuff JUST got plagiarized on another webcomic, again almost directly pixel-for-pixel.

Well, as someone that has such an icon, I don't really feel I deserve any credit for modifiying an existing picture. If I had put a lot of effort into it, then maybe some, but the original creator deserves the most credit.
