"Are you sitting down?   'Cause I don't want you to have a stroke or anything when you hear this."

Well, that prompted a run to his workplace with the pickup and a bunch of boxes.  And we didn't have enough boxes.

And about 30% were in bad enough shape that we couldn't salvage them.

But we got probably 250 books out of that dumpster.

Hardbacks.  Paperbacks.  Textbooks.  Children's books.  How-to.

Several pre-1920.

One at least from 1897.

Bibles.

Romances.

WTFH throws out books???????????????????????????

At least we were able to salvage some.

Call or email if you want to come by and help go through them -- adoption encouraged, of course!  ([personal profile] alrescate, this means you!)

I'm just stunned. Who does that?????

And grateful that we could go get them!

We're gonna put an announcement in the paper with a pic: "Mr and Mrs X would like to thank the anonymous donor....."

I love that idea! A great way to thank the universe for the gift :)

Books are so valuable I cannot imagine someone throwing away anyones thoughts...

who does this? libraries deaccessioning books, used bookstores, but they usually tear off the cover so they can get credit from the distribution, someone in the depths of grief over a dead elderly loved one, overwhelmed by a lifetime's collection of everything under the sun?

just some guesses ...

Why? Why would anyone do that to books? That just boggles my mind!

I'm sure you will have a blast BookCrossing or PaperBackSwap -ing all of the ones you don't read or give to friends...I know I would!

Criminal. Simply criminal.

Sadly people DO throw away books. Better World books mentions that they keep books out of landfill in cases when desperate libraries would otherwise dump 'em.

Did you get Perdita's moocard yet?

Holy shit! That is a crime worthy of some heavy duty draconian punishment right there. I hope you find some rare treasures in there.

OMG! Criminal, throwing away BOOK!?!

Bear in mind that we're eventually going to have a library at White Hart...what to do with them in the meantime, I don't know. But I have every intention of building a how-to resource in old and 'lost' arts, I really do.

Good for you! I need more books like a hole in the head but if you find any that scream my name, I'll bite.

My philosophy is

You don't have too many books. You have not-enough bookshelves.

I may get in trouble for saying this....but I'm entirely willing to set aside a bookshelf for the Faire. Though I don't know how many people would be willing to come this far from town.

I think it'd be wonderful if you can save stuff so we know the books are safe for now. We'll figure it out as we go....

Thanks, dear!

Oh my. What a find! I cannot believe someone would dump all those books....

You know if you want to BookCross those I can help you with that. (And yes I might adopt a few!) I've got a couple of busy weekends ahead of me but we can figure out a time to get together.

I've ordered more bookplates, but if you have 20 or so I could have until they get here I will certainly replace them!

My email went blooey so I didn't see this. Have you already gotten labels? I'd be happy to get you some if you haven't.

Sorry I didn't see this sooner!

wow! i'd love The Aztecs, The World and anything illustration-heavy for collage, but maybe you don't want to rescue books to have them assaulted. i use old biology books, botany books, astronomy. for shipping to me via Media Mail, i could give you some more BPAL, Villainess, tarts, tub toys and a couple of nice collages, at least i think they're good.

sleep on it if you need to, and i can make your pkg fatter! whee!
