Diner Rage
Aug. 24th, 2003 06:04 pmSo i'm at a Waffle House yesterday. My fiance, Eldar, decided to call and have me meet him there after work, so my (our) daughter Tema and her wants-to-be-her-BF come along.
We are there at least once a month--sometimes once a WEEK, depending on appetites and available cash. (Will post why that is such a big emotional factor another time.)
Usually it is a Thor's Day, rather than Saturn's Day, and two paticular servers know us by sight.
We get in and get settled, order up, the Chippie forgets one of the bacon orders. Second round, she forgets Tema's salad. Entirely. Until reminded. "Oh, right, i was gonna get to that."
We are on the all-you-can-eat menu, $6.99 x 3 (David didn't eat), and sodas/tea at $1.19 x 4. Plus appproximately 6.3% tax. This is important, so do the math.
We're done, i decide it's my turn to cover the check, and i hand Chippie the checks. She puts them into the register and comes up with a total of $40.51. Hello?
"Excuse me, that's not right."
"That's what the register says."
"That IS what the register says, but it's NOT right. Should be around $25."
"Well i put in 3 AYCE and 4 sodas and that's what it says. Here, you can see the tape."
"I'm sure you did it right, but the register is wrong."
"The computer can't be wrong, it's $40.51."
"Get your manager."
"The manager isn't here."
"Then get someone with some sense."
(Wailing) "Alan, come take care of this! I won't deal with this! I won't handle these people, they're being rude!"
Ok, my last line was a tad uncivil. It was accurate. I refuse to apologise.
Alan came over, looked at the tickets, added it up with pen and paper, checked the tax sheet, and offered a total of $25.27, or thereabout. That seeming much more in line with the posted prices, i paid without demur, thanked him, got Chippie's name, the manager's name, and his name. Oh--terribly rude of me, but i neglected to leave a tip. The rules there are that Chippie would have gotten it, not the cook (Alan) and i didn't want to see that happen.
Care to guess what the manager is going to hear about Monday morning?
