Remember when I posted the pic on my usericon, the bed of the S-10 full of books salvaged from a dumpster?

According to this site a regular size pickup bed full of books is one gigabyte.  Approximately.

I have a "thumb drive" that holds 4 of those.

I just picked up a one terabyte external hard drive for under $100, tax included.

that's enough storage for 1,000 pickup trucks worth of books.

I'm gonna go lie down with a cold washcloth and a warm puppy.

It gets worse. I keep finding myself astonished that only a few companies are starting to lower prices on 4-gig thumb drives, as they're so old by computing standards that they'll be passé in a year, if they aren't already. Eight gigs, 16 gigs, and 32 gigs are becoming more popular and cheaper. I recently (last few months) upgraded my 2-gig MP3 player to a 16 gig model, and only because I was having a hard time finding a 32 gig MP3 player that wasn't an iPod. I find it adequate to my music needs, though.

My friend Brooke has, in her possession, computer memory that could not have held a single KILObyte. She owns old computers with RAM measured in double-digit MEGAbytes.

I firmly believe I will live to see the day when anyone owning a hard drive with less than 500 terrabytes will be looked at with amused disdain.

My first computer used the TV as a monitor and cassette tapes for the programs. I bought a 8KB RAM pack ($100!) to bump the memory up to 16KB. (1983)
My next computer came with 4 MB of RAM and a 250MB hard drive. I added 4 MB of RAM (for $100 per megabyte!), and the guy at the store asked me what I was planning to do with So Much Memory and Storage! I explained I was an engineering student and he just nodded. (1992)
Now that $100 gets me a terabyte.
A fucking terabyte.
And I need at least 4 terabytes more right now for video backup.
Where's my flying car?
