Dates for the new Zodiac alignment

IMO, Astrology is pseudo-science and not reliable.  Same with Tarot and other practices.  Yes, I read Tarot -- I've never said it is a science, infallible or reliable.  Yes, I've has my chart done by someone I respect in other arenas, but I maintain that in my experience, astrology, tarot, the runes, pendulums, et cetera ad infinitum are ways to get you to pay attention to your subconscious -- the part of your brain that processes things while you're not paying attention.

To those of you who are flailing wildly at the idea that you now have to readjust your personalities and daily lives to reflect your new signs:  I really hope you're being facetious.

I view my astrological sign much like i do an old username, I'll only change it if I really have to. I chose verminiusrex (bastardized Latin for "rat king") because I used to have pet rats and bred them for awhile. I haven't had rats in over 12 years, but I like the username and plan to stick with it.

I've been an Aquarius all my life. Maybe technically I'm a Capricorn now, but I don't care.

That is exactly how I view the tarot, along with various other ritual practices. As focus objects for meditation. Anyway, my "new" sign fits me way better than the old one, anyway.

[sigh] I don't know why someone dug this up and pasted it all over the net, but it's old news in the astrology community, from what I can tell.

Most Eastern astrology systems use the sidereal zodiac, which changes with the precession of the equinoxes. Western astrology, however, uses tropical astrology, which does *not*. So, unless you're into Mesopotamian or Chinese astrology, your Zodiac signs *haven't* changed, especially your Sun sign, which is the one everybody reads in the newspaper.

[edit to add] Zia, I agree with you completely about divination in general[ it's an art, *not* a science. This also explains why it's so difficult to do divination for oneself; the results are skewed by our own conscious and unconscious desires and fears. I tend to laugh at most dream interpretation books, for instance.

My thoughts, posted on a forum I frequent:

I'm a Christian (duh), and have never put truck in astrology. I do, however, acknowledge the importance of the four terrestrial elements, fire, earth, wind, and water to various belief systems. (For what it's worth, I'm earth aligned, and I just read that so is my Sign).

The zodiac is based on these elements, as well. Adding a thirteenth sign will throw this off and make it impossible to balance the elements. The Babylonians and Greeks who developed Western astrology weren't just watching the stars; they were mathematicians. Making discovery after discovery, from the number zero to the pythagorean theorem, these people used math to create an elegant and simple system to predict order in a chaotic world. Using a prime, and a particularly heinous prime (many Americans are triscadecophobic), defeats the whole purpose of astrology.

I'm sure you knew most or all of this already, but I just thought I'd show my support.

Thanks TK :) I figured you'd have a logical view of the subject!

I try to be sensible. There's one religion that I find incredibly difficult to handle sensibly. But that's because that religion has produced suicide bombers who kill their own to protest foreigners.

Kudos to you for using "triscadecophobic" in a sentance!

I just hope I spelled it right! It's not as easy as hippopotomonstrosesquipedaliophobia, which is perfectly phonetic. ;)

From what I'm reading, this "new sign" will only affect those born after 2008. The rest of us can breathe easy. And I'm breathing especially easy because I'll still be an Aquarius ;)

My Aunt Helene, a devout Catholic and a professional astrologer back in the 70s and 80s, had a great analogy she used to explain astrology; "God created all the heavens and the earth. He also put a hidden calculator* up there to keep track of how personalities were assigned to the newly-born."
This made sense to me as a teen, and just as much sense today. And I give as much credence to astrology as I do to Catholicism.

*pre-personal computers. She would have loved PCs as a better analogy.

I find astrology and mediumship and tarot to be art forms, not sciences. And I am sticking to that! :)

Personally, as someone who doesn't believe in the whole kettle of that, honestly -- I'm also quite curious about why it's getting so much press, to the point where other things that ought to get some decent press -aren't-. Like, say, Lebanon disintegrating, or the potential of a creation of a new state in Sudan, or the massive flooding in Australia and other places.

Not pseudo-science...more like archetypal character analysis. Astronmy, which is where all this hoopla is coming from is science and it deals with absolutes. Astrology, however, is much more fluid and deals with archetypes...not absolutes. My two cents. Even with the new calculations figured in, I'm still a Taurus, lol.
